The
ETO Conference addresses fear-based belief systems, negative
stereotypes, polarization, enemy images, scapegoating, and artificial
barriers of distrust that divide us to promote a wider public
dialogue about images of "Us and Them." It is an
integrated,
multi-disciplinary collaboration
with global representation, and is held in
conjunction with an upcoming edited book in progress addressing
psycho-social concepts of "The
Other" in a cross-cultural forum.
It examines
this fundamentally subjective phenomenon with a multicultural
eye for the purpose of stimulating more public dialogue; deeper
inquiry into fundamental questions, dilemmas, and implications;
formulating findings for publication and wider public awareness;
and tapping our shared wisdom - from the local to the global -
in developing practical applications for promoting increased understanding,
sensitivity, and compassion.

Global
Network for
the Study of
Transgenerational
Trauma
A
focused dialogue
and deliberation
on the dynamics
of inherited,
unresolved communal
trauma from
one generation
to the next,
including historical
understandings,
the development
and perpetuation
of communal
victim identities,
exclusive cultural
membership and
rites of belonging,
and implications
for present
and future relations
between communities
- particularly
war and violence,
and the development
of new models
and methodologies
for healing
and preventing
communal trauma
and it's transfer
into future
generations.
Transgenerational
trauma is seen
as an underlying
and potent fuel
for the eruption
of violence
in the past,
present, and
future. Understanding
it's dynamics
and implications,
and developing
ways to effectively
treat it, are
seen as essential
to healing and
reconciliation
within and between
communities,
establishing
compassionate
local and global
relations, and
achieving sustainable
peace.
Goals
Include:
Promoting
a collaborative
global network
of permanent
working groups
with cross-cultural
representation
- essential
to universal
understanding
and culturally
appropriate
applications
- that cooperate
on researching
and addressing
intergenerational
trauma: Global
Network for
the Study of
Transgenerational
Trauma,
Creating
and compiling
a body of
knowledge
shared globally
with practitioners
and researchers
from related
human service
and relationship
fields (including
mental health,
medical health,
sociology, cultural
anthropology,
education, etc.),
conflict transformation
and peace building
researchers
and activists,
government representatives,
public policy
makers, community
leaders, religious
leaders, other
stakeholders,
and the general
public. This
would include
establishing
a resource library
of proceedings
and a virtual
journal with
a blend of scholarship,
insight, and
practical application.
Development
of culturally
appropriate
perspectives,
treatment models,
and methodologies
at the societal
level for healing
and preventing
the intergenerational
transfer of
unresolved trauma
and communal
victim identity,
and training
programs to
teach these
skills and understandings
to individuals
engaged in social
healing.
Increase
understanding,
sensitivity,
and appreciation
of the implications
of these
psycho-social
dynamics
within and between
communities,
and how to help
reduce and prevent
the carry over
of unresolved
trauma and victim
identity into
subsequent generations.
In addition
to reaching
parents within
the general
public through
various means
of public education,
vital to achieving
this goal is
enlisting the
involvement,
support, and
cooperation
of those profoundly
influencing
the next generation
in learning
societal identity,
such as educators,
religious leaders,
cultural/societal
representatives,
those generating
public media,
etc.

Integrated
International Conference Series
In 2004 CBI initiated an experiment to coordinate
an integrated series of 5 international conferences in 3 countries
that shared a focus on exploring and advancing
a consciousness of peace, forgiveness, and reconciliation. The
intent was to create a means for building on the concentrated
focus, energy, and potential generated within the dynamics of
conferences, to both increase the potential of each event and
promote a more effective channeling of this energy into practical
applications beyond the events themselves.
While each was independent,
all events in this series were programmatically linked to build
on each other for an energetic flow and larger impact. As a
result of continuing this cooperation each year, outcomes have
emerged and coalesced synergistically, inspiring promising new
collaborative projects and partnerships, some of which CBI
is directly involved in and others created by participants.
Following the success of this model we have continued
the process each year, adding new conferences and inviting
other international conferences to join in maximizing the energy
and products of each event to promote an expanding network of
social activists and healers for greater mutual benefit.
Through such collaborations we work to raise the level, depth,
and breadth of public awareness and dialogue on vital issues
in exploring a consciousness of peace, to empower
the individual in society, and to foster proactive networks
that create practical strategies for applying
results in advancing capacity for a culture
of peace, locally and globally.
This model of integrated events continues into
2013.
International
Youth
Conference on
"The Ecology of War and Peace"
In 2004 CBI established
"The Ecology of War
and Peace" (EWP)
in partnership with International
Humanistic Psychology Association (IHPA), and
HARMONY Institute, and in
cooperation with
the Jane
Goodal Institute. The
EWP Conference is a youth event for participants 14-18 years of
age addressing issues of negative stereotypes,
prejudice, and demonizing
and dehumanizing individuals and groups.
The theme of ecology and
environmental consciousness is used
as a common link all parties can resonate and experience being "on
the same side" with as they also delve into personal interactions
and explore the above relationship dynamics. Included in this process
is exploring the ecological impact of human wars. A virtual Global
Youth Community, for and operated by youth participants, is currently
being established through CBI's web site to continue future dialogue,
cooperation, and joint projects beyond the conferences.
The conference is open to all participants globally
